There is no shortage of "time-management" tools and tricks out there, but is that really what we should be managing? After all, time is something that none of us can really control. Time is the great equalizer. It's the one thing that we cannot buy or borrow more of.
No matter how wealthy or poor a person is, they have the same amount of hours in a day. Whether you're black, white, other, or grew up in the suburbs or ghetto you still have just 24 hours.
Why then do we try to manage time which is an impossible task? To manage implies that we have some sort of control over the thing we are managing. Undoubtedly, trying to manage time leaves most people saying, "There just aren't enough hours in the day to get it all done!"
Here's the hard truth that no one wants to acknowledge, it's not time that's the problem, it's you. Better yet, it's the way you allocate your energy. You can get the best planner and come up with the best schedule, but if you don't manage where you put your energy you will fail every time.
Manage your energy not time, energy is actually something you can control.
Instead of blindly creating a to-do list get vigilant about eliminating the people, places, things, and emotions in your life that are time-consuming. Replace them with people, places, things, and emotions that are productive.
Here's an exercise you can do that will help you organize your life in such a way that you are always productive and have more hours for the things that truly matter.
Break your life down into the following categories;
Productive = Get's you closure to your goals and/or the person you want to be.
Time-consuming = Does not get you closure to your goals and/or the person you want to be and are avoidable.
Neutral = Either has no effect or is something you cannot avoid like filing taxes😒.
When breaking your life down you should consider all the people in your life, all the places you go, and all the things you do. Also, think about the emotions you feel most often (anger, joy, contentment, sadness, depression, resentment, happiness) and categorize them too.
Now it's time for you to make some hard decisions and stick with them! Begin to eliminate the things in your life that are time-consuming. You can get rid of them altogether or replace them with something that's productive. This way, you're guaranteed to reach your goals faster and always have enough hours in the day to get it all done.
